Going against the flow: The effects of non-Gaussian dispersal kernels

چکیده

16 Our previous studies discuss when populations and gradients in allele fre17 quency can persist in the presence of a mean downstream dispersal of propag18 ules from the parents’ location. These studies assume that reproduction is 19 uniform over the lifetime of the adult, and that the larval dispersal kernel 20 is “nearly” Gaussian in shape. These results are extended below to include 21 variable reproduction over the lifetime of an adult and non-Gaussian dispersal 22 kernels. It is found that persistence is governed by the lifetime reproductive 23 output of the adults. The impact of non-Gaussian dispersal kernels is quan24 tified in terms of the excess kurtosis of the dispersal kernel. 25 26

A short note on short dispersal events.

We study how the speed of spread for an integrodifference equation depends on the dispersal pattern of individuals. When the dispersal kernel has finite variance, the central limit theorem states that convolutions of the kernel with itself will approach a suitably chosen Gaussian distribution. Despite this fact, the speed of spread cannot be obtained from the Gaussian approximation. We give sev...

Families of discrete kernels for modeling dispersal.

Integer lattices are important theoretical landscapes for studying the consequences of dispersal and spatial population structure, but convenient dispersal kernels able to represent important features of dispersal in nature have been lacking for lattices. Because leptokurtic (centrally peaked and long-tailed) kernels are common in nature and have important effects in models, of particular inter...

TIME-VARYING FUZZY SETS BASED ON A GAUSSIAN MEMBERSHIP FUNCTIONS FOR DEVELOPING FUZZY CONTROLLER

The paper presents a novel type of fuzzy sets, called time-Varying Fuzzy Sets (VFS). These fuzzy sets are based on the Gaussian membership functions, they are depended on the error and they are characterized by the displacement of the kernels to both right and left side of the universe of discourse, the two extremes kernels of the universe are fixed for all time. In this work we focus only on t...

Evolution of dispersal distance: maternal investment leads to bimodal dispersal kernels.

Since dispersal research has mainly focused on the evolutionary dynamics of dispersal rates, it remains unclear what shape evolutionarily stable dispersal kernels have. Yet, detailed knowledge about dispersal kernels, quantifying the statistical distribution of dispersal distances, is of pivotal importance for understanding biogeographic diversity, predicting species invasions, and explaining r...

Periodic Traveling Waves in Integrodifferential Equations for Nonlocal Dispersal

Periodic traveling waves (wavetrains) have been extensively studied for reaction-diffusion equations. One important motivation for this work has been the identification of periodic traveling wave patterns in spatiotemporal data sets in ecology. However, for many ecological populations, diffusion is no more than a rough phenomenological representation of dispersal, and spatial convolution with a...
